  • Entry Requirements

You can progress onto the Higher National Diploma after successfully completing the Higher National Certificate in Sport (Community Sport & Physical Activity).

  • Assessment

Teaching and learning in BTEC Higher Nationals will be vocational, active, motivational and progressive. It will be closely linked to assessment, allowing development of skills, knowledge and attributes that will enable learners to complete your assessments. Lessons will have an emphasis on active learning, drawing upon the materials gained from the working environment or sports industry wherever possible. Examples of the learning strategies include:

    • Project work carried out as an individual or as part of a group
    • Work-based learning
    • Lectures and seminars
    • Workshops
    • Facilitated activities
    • Visits to employers
    • Field trips
    • Visiting speakers from the sports industry Many of the units are practical in nature, giving students the opportunity to tackle ‘real life’ examples to apply their skills and knowledge to case studies or projects. The College’s virtual learning environment enables students to engage in online delivery through a blended learning approach combined with face-to-face learning. Pearson BTECs combine a student-centred approach with a flexible, unit-based structure. Students will be required to apply their knowledge to a variety of assignments and activities, with a focus on the holistic development of practical, interpersonal and higher-level thinking skills. Assessment reflects not only what learners know but also what they can do to succeed in employment and higher education in an ethical manner.

Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals require students to produce a wide variety of different forms of assessment evidence to meet the learning outcomes being assessed. For many units, the practical demonstration of skills is necessary and, for others, students will need to carry out their own research and analysis, working independently or as part of a team. BTEC Higher Nationals in Sport are assessed using a combination of internally assessed centre-devised internal assignments (which are set and marked by College) and internally assessed Pearson-set assignments (which are set by Pearson and marked by the College). Pearson-set assignments are mandatory and target particular industry-specific skills.
